The Chocolate Queens and Kings: Turning Struggle into Strength for Mental Health

Chocolate Queens & Kings of New Zealand fundraising for I am Hope NZ

When people are nasty and cruel, don’t stoop to their low; when they go low, we go high.

These words, echoing Michelle Obama’s famous call for grace in the face of adversity, have become a mantra for the former Cadbury workers in Dunedin—known as the Chocolate Queens and Kings. For over four and a half years, these resilient individuals have stood firm in the face of emotional and financial hardship, raising over $91,000 for the mental health and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

The Fight for Fairness

The journey of the Chocolate Queens and Kings began with loss—loss of jobs, security, and a sense of community. After being made redundant by Cadbury, the workers, many of whom had been with the company for decades, were left grappling with the hurt of being discarded. But the pain didn’t stop there. They were met with bullying, discrimination, and gaslighting from those who should have been their support network.

Despite their immense challenges, these brave individuals refused to be silenced. Instead, they channeled their collective trauma into a force for good, launching a fundraising initiative for mental health awareness. While the national media largely ignored their plight, and the Dunedin community offered little support, they kept pushing forward, knowing their cause was larger than any single moment of hardship.

Standing Strong

The fight has not been easy. The workers have stood on a car park—often alone, often without recognition—for years, fighting not just for justice for themselves, but for the well-being of others. They’ve endured the sting of being overlooked and misjudged, but their mission has remained steadfast: to support those struggling with mental health issues in New Zealand.

Their story, though largely unreported, is a testament to the power of resilience. These "Chocolate Queens and Kings" prove that even in the darkest times, kindness and compassion can be the strongest weapons. And in a world where people are often quick to tear others down, they have chosen to rise above.

Turning Pain into Purpose

Every dollar raised is a step toward breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and providing vital support to those in need. For the Chocolate Queens and Kings, this work is personal—it's about offering a hand to those who may feel abandoned, just as they once did. It’s about making sure that no one feels as though they have to face their struggles alone.

Their fight is far from over. As they continue to push for recognition, they carry the hope that one day, the world will hear their story. It’s not just a story of redundancy and betrayal, but of hope, strength, and unwavering determination to make a positive difference.

The Legacy of the Chocolate Queens and Kings

What began as a response to personal injustice has transformed into a movement of compassion and empowerment. The impact of their efforts is far-reaching, as they continue to provide mental health support, raise awareness, and inspire others to stand up against mistreatment.

As they continue their journey, the Chocolate Queens and Kings remind us all of the power of resilience. When the world goes low, they go high—and in doing so, they create a legacy of hope for those who need it most.
